A team of Portuguese students was selected for the “Spin your Thesis!” Program of the European Space Agency (ESA), organized annually by its Education Office.
The selected team consists of Daniel Carvalho, Guilherme Aresta and Miguel Ferreira (Master in Bioengineering , jointly organized by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, FEUP, and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, ICBAS) , and Raquel Almeida, PhD student from MIT Portugal program in Bioengineering Systems, under the supervision of Dr. Pedro Granja, from INEB – Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica, University of Porto.
The research work proposed by the team selected aims to study the effect of hypergravity the formation and growth of blood vessels, which may have application in regenerative medicine as well as in various disease processes. This initiative will enable the Portuguese team to run their experiments in world-class gravitational facilities using the Large Diameter Centrifuge facility located at ESA’s European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.
This project will be funded by the “Spin Your Thesis!” Program and INEB.
